If your idea of a zoo is a place where animals
are trapped behind bars for the pleasure of spectators, think again. There are
some fantastic zoos around the world with cutting-edge animal enclosures
focused on conservation, preservation and showcasing animals in a more natural
environment. So if you’re travelling with kids or just want to connect with nature,
don’t let the bad rap zoos often get put you off visiting these zoos. Here are
some that we think are worth visiting.
Taronga Zoo, Sidney .....
Just catching the ferry to the Taronga Zoo in
Sydney is an experience. The ferry takes you through Syndey Harbour, past the
world-famous Opera House and is the perfect build up to one of the world’s best
zoos. The location of the zoo on the shores of Sydney Harbour means you get to
enjoy magnificent views of the city as you make you walk along the paths that
connect animal enclosures. The zoo has a lovely variety of local and exotic
species and a great aquarium. It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re staying
in a Sydney holiday rental.
Singapore Zoo ....
The Singapore Zoo is located in a beautiful, lush rainforest area,
next to Upper Seletar Reservoir. What makes the zoo stand out is the fantastic
“open concept” exhibits, where moats, natural vegetation and other natural
features separate you from the animals. There are still some glass walls to
protect visitors from the more dangerous animals, but it’s a far cry from the
traditional bars and cages that normally come to mind when you think of the
word zoo. You can get up close and personal with nature here, feed an elephant,
or watch orangutans interact with the crowd. The zoo has some fantastic
exhibits like the Primate Kingdom, Wild Africa, Elephants of Asia, Australian
Outback, Reptile Garden and great underwater views of penguins, polar bears and
sea lions. It will also be opening a new River Safari exhibit later this year.
Berlin Zoo .....
Berlin Zoo is the oldest zoo in Germany and attracts over 3 million
visitors each year. The zoo covers 34 hectares (84 acres) and showcases over
17,500 animals. Animals roam around large, open habitats, there is an excellent
aquarium, and visitors get to watch regular animal feedings. Berlin Zoo has
worked with several universities and research institutes, participating in
species reintroduction programs and endangered species programs.
San Diego Zoo .......
The San Diego Zoo is a 100-acre world-famous complex that has a
fantastic collection of exotic and extraordinary animals. Popular exhibits
include Elephant Odyssey, Panda Trek and the Lost Forest gorillas. There are
several guided tours and special experiences that allow you to interact with the
animals. The zoo has focused on conservation and education and has a Giant
Panda Research Center that has been tremendously successful in breeding these
endangered animals.
National Zoological Gardens of South Africa, Pretoria .....
The National Zoological Gardens, is South Africa’s
largest zoo. The zoo covers 85 hectares and includes an aquarium and reptile
park. What makes the zoo so special is the overnight camping adventure. If
you’ve ever wanted to hear the roar of a lion just before you go to bed, and
the early morning stirring of the African bush, then this is the place to be.
Guided tours start at the campsite and not only allow you to explore the zoo,
but also give you an education in African folklore. There is also a night tour,
where you can explore the world of nocturnal animals.
These are just a few of the zoos we think are worth visiting, but
there are plenty of other world-class zoos, with interactive, educational and
state-of-the-art exhibits. Some of our other favourites include Bronx Zoo in
New York City, Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha Nebraska, Zoo Praha in Prague and
Australia Zoo in Queensland.
