aimed at developing the coir industry of Kerala and tourism. Kochi-MuzirisBiennale, the first Biennale in India was conducted in Kochi from 12 December
2012 till 13 March 2013. The government contributed about 12-150 million on the
event.
Medical
tourism, promoted by traditional systems of medicine like Ayurveda and Siddha,
is widely popular in the state, and draws increasing numbers of tourists.
Ayurvedic medicine is a system of Hindu traditional medicine of Vedic
tradition, is native to the Indian subcontinent, and is a form of alternative
medicine. There is no scientific evidence for the effectiveness of Ayurvedic
medicine for the treatment of any disease.
Backwater
tourism is centered mostly around Alappuzha, Kollam and Kumarakom. Boat races
held during festival seasons are also a major tourist attraction in the
backwater regions.
The
Kerala Backwaters are a network of interconnected canals, rivers, lakes and
inlets, a labyrinthine system formed by more than 900 km of waterways, and
sometimes compared to the American Bayou. In the midst of this landscape there
are a number of towns and cities, which serve as the starting and end points of
backwater cruises. National Waterway No 3 from Kollam to Kottapuram covers a
distance of 205 km and runs almost parallel to the coast line of southern
Kerala facilitating both cargo movement and backwater tourism. The backwaters
have a unique ecosystem - freshwater from the rivers meets the seawater from
the Arabian Sea.
Alappuzha
is an important tourist destination in India. The Backwaters of Alappuzha are
the most popular tourist attraction in Kerala. A houseboat cruise in these
backwaters is a delightful experience. It connects Kumarakom and Cochin to the
North and Quilon to the South. The mullackal chirap is also one of the
attractions of Allapuzha which is the festive season held ten colourful days
every year in the month of December
